During the lockdown, many gyms and recreational centers were closed down. Due to this, many of us gained weight purely due to a lack of physical activity. Not to mention, the stress that everyone was experiencing; stress is a huge contributor to weight gain. As the COVID-19 numbers were rising, especially in New York City, our anxiety also increased. On top of all this, many of us were taking care of kids and were tirelessly trying to navigate the world of remote learning.
Remember, research shows us that stress contributes to our weight gain because we are especially more likely to want to take comfort in something- anything- in an effort to feel even a little bit better. Many people turn to food and so their weight increases. Comfort foods like pizza, bread, rice, sweets, cakes, and cookies should not be where we seek our comfort and should, rather, be a place of enjoyment- every once and a while of course.
The weight gain that many people experienced during this lockdown not only effected the mere numbers we see on the scale but we also have seen the rise of the comorbidities associated with obesity such as higher blood sugar, higher cholesterol, higher blood pressure, and overall poorer health.
